Abstract

This book presents the fundamentals of the discipline "Semiotics of Art" as a science exploring the semiotic nature of art. It provides a systematic exposition of the key concepts, terms, and categories of semiotics as empirical and theoretical knowledge, exploring the properties, structures, and types of signs. It analyzes the sign systems represented in social semiotics. The primary focus is on describing the sign systems of the arts—both non-applied (music, dance, image) and applied (architecture, costume, design). It substantiates the historical concept of the interaction between language and the sign systems of the arts. General historical features of the development of semiotics as a field of humanities knowledge are outlined. The textbook includes a glossary of terms used in the course, illustrations, and musical notation examples. All illustrations, except photographs taken by the author, are taken from open sources.
