This publication is intended for students of the Department of Space Physics of the Physics Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University. It can be used for educational and scientific purposes by senior undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers specializing in cosmic ray, space, and high-energy physics.
This manual covers the material of a two-semester course. The first part of the manual is devoted to the fundamental phenomena in space and high-energy physics. It examines such fundamental phenomena as cascades in a homogeneous medium, a layered detector, neutron wander, and the motion of charged particles in a dipole magnetic field. The second part addresses detector modeling and particle detection.
Typical detectors and experimental setups are discussed: a scintillation spectrometer, a SONG spectrometer, and the recording and processing of data on charged particles and Cherenkov light from extensive air showers (EAS).
